Versus the World is the fourth studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth . It was released on November 18, 2002 via Metal Blade Records . In 2005 the album was released as a picture LP with a strictly limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies. A re-release as Versus the World Deluxe Reissue took place on November 29, 2009. A music video was shot for the song Death in Fire .
Origin and publication history
The songwriting took place within a year, primarily on various tours of the band, and could be completely completed by the time the recordings were made. Originally Amon Amarth wanted to record the album again with Peter Tägegren in the Abyss Studio . Since he had almost completely stopped his activity as a producer at that time, the band decided on the Berno Studio in Malmö , which they had become aware of through the previous work of the studio. It was finally in August 2002 by Berno Paulsson received and Henrik Larsson mixed and mastered . The cover artwork was created jointly by Tom Thiel and the Düsseldorf graphic artist and designer Thomas Ewerhard , who also did the rest of the artwork for the album.
Hegg explained the album title Versus the World in an interview with the German webzine metal.de as follows:
“In principle, each of us has to fight [the fight against the world]. Everyone knows the feeling when you suddenly think that everything and everyone has conspired against you and thus the whole world is against you alone. But mainly it is a message to fight for your cause, to fight for what you stand for and to do what you think is right, although many try to bring you down and tell you what to do and have to leave. If you look at the title from the band's point of view, then it also represents a retrospective of our career and the last ten years. We had many lows, but in the end they only made us stronger. "
Versus the World Deluxe Reissue
In the course of Amon Amarth's Bloodshed over Bochum concert series, which took place from 28–31 December 2008 lasted, the album was performed and recorded in full on December 31st at the Bochum colliery . On November 29, 2009, Versus the World was re-released as a new mastered edition by Jens Bogren, together with the live recording as a 2-CD digipack. The concert was also filmed and on the bonus DVD of Surtur Rising- - Digipaks published March 25, 2011th

style
music
Versus the World's music is a bit slower and less brutal than The Crusher and is more similar to the first two albums. There are also significantly more melodies and harmonies in the songs than in the predecessor. Johan Hegg says:
“[The album] is a combination of 'The Avenger' and 'The Crusher' with some forays into 'Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds' and 'Once Sent From The Golden Hall' times because 'Versus The World' has all the elements these albums united. You have the slow pieces, the brutal tracks, the melodies and harmonies. Of course, there are also new building blocks [and the] melodic parts [are given a lot more weight thanks to the good production] than was the case before. "
Texts
Thematically, Versus the World, as well as the previous albums of the band, is about the Vikings . What is new, however, is the design as a concept album about Ragnarök , the end of the world in Nordic mythology . The texts are all written in English . According to his own statements, Hegg is inspired by various books and the Edda .
reception
The album was well or very well received by almost all reviewers. The slight change in style was mostly praised, taking out some of the heaviness of the previous album and composing it more melodically. Metalgreg from the webzine metal.de praised the songwriting as well as the good production, awarded 8 out of 10 points and described the music on the album as "first-class, melodic Death Metal".
The album is also highly praised by Marc from metal1.info . He awards 8.5 out of 10 points for the album and comes to the following conclusion:
“Amon Amarth [has] an impressive record with" Versus the World ". […] A perfect mixture of Death Metal, Nordic influences and first-class melodies is offered here, which both the Melodic Death faction and the tough Cannibal Corpse / Six Feet Under etc. disciples may inspire. People who don't like the puritanical form of this direction shouldn't be put off by my designation as Death Metal , because you don't actually hear dull beating here at all. Melodies are in the foreground, without the whole thing being called Melodic Death Metal à la In Flames . I would like to highlight the brilliant work of Olavi Mikkonen and Fredrik Andersson, who really surprised me in a very positive way. Johan Göderberg [sic!] Also does a divine solo in the opener. [...] 'Versus the World' is one of the most sensible investments in music that could be made in 2002. "
