The Avenger is the second studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth . It was released on September 13, 1999 via Metal Blade Records . It is the first release on which the then new drummer Fredrik Andersson can be heard after the departure of his predecessor, Martin Lopez. In 2005 the album was released as a picture LP with a strictly limited edition of 500 copies. In 2009 the album was re-released.

Origin and publication history

The album was recorded and mixed after a year-long songwriting process in the Abyss Studio by Peter Tägtgren . The mastering was carried out by Peter In De Betou in the Stockholm Cutting Room Studios in April 1999. The cover artwork is by the Düsseldorf graphic artist and designer Thomas Ewerhard .

The Avenger Deluxe Reissue

As part of Amon Amarth's Bloodshed over Bochum concert series from December 28th to 31st, 2008, the album was performed and recorded in full on December 29th. On May 22, 2009, The Avenger was re-released as a newly mastered edition together with the live recording as a 2-CD digipack. The title list corresponds to the digipack version; only in the live version of the album is the song Thor Arise missing because it was not performed. The concert was also filmed and released on the Surtur Rising Digipack bonus DVD on March 25, 2011.

reception

The album received mostly positive, albeit rarely euphoric, feedback from the press and fans. The author Pro from the webzine metal.de gives the album 8 out of 10 points and describes it as a worthy successor to the debut albums , despite the lack of originality bonus as with Once Sent from the Golden Hall . Marcel Steinberg from metal1.info gave the album 7.5 out of 10 and describes it as a solid, but not extraordinary album that a fan should own. One point of criticism that was often mentioned was the relatively short running time of the CD at just under 40 minutes.
