Fear of God was an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles , California , which emerged from the band Détente in 1989 and was disbanded in 1996.

history

The band was formed in 1989 from the renaming of the band Détente after they had signed a contract with the Warner Music Group . The band recorded their debut album called Within the Veil at producer Pat Regan's recording studio . The album was mixed by Andy Wallace . The band sent the recordings to Warner Music, with the group still called Sediction. After leafing through the Bible, Carlino came up with the name Fear of God.

The album was released in 1991. This was followed by a tour of the USA in the summer, which included 30 performances. Ten appearances before the end of the tour, there was a physical argument between drummer Steve Cordova and singer Dawn Crosby , which led to Cordova leaving the band at the end of the tour. He was replaced by Brendan Etter. After Christmas of the same year, the band did some recordings in the studio. The following year she played on the tour of Gdansk . Jason Levin also joined the band as the new bass player.

In early 1992, the band went to London in Battery Studios , with the recordings taking place under the direction of producer Chris Tsangarides . During the recordings there were disputes between Michael Carlino and singer Dawn Crosby, so that she no longer appeared for the recordings and the vocal passages could not be completed. Crosby went back to her hometown of Annapolis , Maryland . Together with guitarists Jay Abbene and Terry Carter, drummer Shannon Larkin, all working for Wrathchild America , and bassist Rob Michael, she went on a tour through Europe . In April they also performed at the Aardschokdag Festival .

Then she returned to the band, and Douglas Sylvia joined the band as a new drummer. The band recorded a new demo, which featured guitarists Brandon Hefner and Randy Bobzien. After the recordings, Sylvia left the band again, so the demo was re-recorded with the new drummer John Grden. Hefner left the band during a tour in the summer of 1993 and was replaced by Chris Kalandras. On February 12, 1994, the band signed a contract with Pavement Music for an album. On March 7th, the band went to the studio in Florida . Several appearances followed in July. During the recording of the album there were also disputes with drummer John Grden, as a result of which all members except for singer Crosby left the band.

The album Toxic Voodoo was released in 1994. This was followed by a tour where bassist Bruce Greig and guitarists Bill Hayden and Sparky Voyles joined the band. In 1995 the band recorded another demo. Voyles was replaced by Frank Dimauro. In the spring of 1996 he left the band and was replaced by Tony Mallory, who also played keyboard in the band. Bassist Bruce Greig also left the band and was replaced by Mike Schafer.

Dawn Crosby passed away on December 15, 1996, of liver failure caused by years of alcohol abuse. Her death meant the end of the band. However, the members continued to play under the name Fog for a few years.

style

The band plays classic thrash metal, with influences from rock and gothic areas being audible.
