Daniel Pezzotti

Daniel Pezzotti (born April 9, 1962 in Zurich ; † October 7, 2017 ) was a Swiss cellist who distinguished himself in both classical music and jazz .

Live and act

Pezzotti began playing the cello and piano when he was five. In 1981 he completed his studies with Claude Starck at the Zurich Conservatory with distinction. In the field of classical music, he has enjoyed a lively international concert career as a soloist and chamber musician. From 1986 he was a member of the Zurich Opera Orchestra . He founded the Palladio Ensemble , which juxtaposes chamber music and architecture, alongside the Arara Triowhich is particularly committed to the performance of Brazilian composers in Europe. As a member of both ensembles, he toured extensively in Europe, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. He also took part in important festivals such as the Warsaw Autumn , the Festival Internacional Cervantino , the Salzburg Palace Concerts and the International June Festival in Zurich. In his last years Pezzotti also worked with the baroque formation La Scintilla and the Ensemble Kontraste Zürich , which contrasts tried and tested chamber music with current compositions. He was also the principal cellist of the Swiss Chamber Orchestra and the Zurich String Soloists.

In addition, Pezzotti turned increasingly to jazz and improvisation music in his last years. He worked on projects with musicians such as Daniel Schnyder , Stephan Kurmann , Ann Malcolm , Lee Konitz , Steve Swallow , Andy Scherrer , Adam Taubitz , Günther Wehinger and Adrian Mears . There were performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival , the North Sea Jazz Festival , the JazzFest Berlin and other international jazz festivals. As a friend of the Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal , he performed with his group in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro , Rome , Florence , Geneva and Zurich. From this joint work a duo developed with Carlos Malta, the flutist and saxophonist from Pascoal's group, who released the album Rainbow (Sony - Brazil). He also recorded several times with Andreas Vollenweider and Thierry Lang , but also with Vera Kaa and also took part in the new recording of Die kleine Niederdorfoper .

In Rio de Janeiro, Pezzotti worked for many years as a guest lecturer at the International Cello Encounter . At the Zurich University of the Arts , he taught the violoncello as a lecturer (major and minor).

Pezzotti died in October 2017 at the age of 55 of complications from a serious illness.
