Russell Ferrante
Russell Ferrante (born January 18, 1952 in San José , California ) is an American keyboard player of fusion jazz , who is best known as the head of the Yellowjackets .

Russell Ferrante had piano lessons from the age of nine and began as a singer and pianist in his father's church choir. He then played in R&B bands and was then a member of Robben Ford's group , which was Jimmy Witherspoon's backing band from 1973 to 1975 . He then worked in San Francisco for three years , before returning to Robben Ford in 1978 with bassist Jimmy Haslip . In 1980 the Yellowjackets emerged from this band , initially with drummer Ricky Lawson, and released their first album a year later. In 1982 the band broke up and Ferrante worked for Joni Mitchell . After a Grammy nomination, the Yellowjackets formed anew around him in 1984. Ferrante has also worked on recordings of Sadao Watanabe , Bob Malach , Bobby McFerrin , Eric Marienthal , Lee Ritenour , Marilyn Scott , Take 6 , Leni Stern , Chuck Loeb , Dave Samuels , the GRP Big Band , Carl Anderson and Peter O'Mara ; he also worked with Ernie Watts .
Ferrante is a faculty member at the University of Southern California and leads workshops elsewhere.
