Michael Formanek (born May 7, 1958 in San Francisco ) is an American jazz bassist and composer.

Live and act

Formanek graduated from California State University . He worked as a sideman a. a. with Freddie Hubbard , Joe Henderson , Dave Liebman , Fred Hersch and Attila Zoller , before his first album as a band leader and composer was released in 1990: Wide Open Spaces . The saxophonist Tim Berne took part for the first time on his second album, Extended Animation , and became one of his most important musical partners in the following years.

In 1994 Formanek became a member of Bernes' quartet Bloodcount , with whom he recorded several albums. In the late 1990s he toured the US as a duo with Formanek and recorded the album Ornery People with him in 1998 . In the following year his solo album Am I Bothering You? . In addition, he toured the United States with Gerry Hemingway's quartet .

At the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in New York in 2000, Formanek introduced his new quartet Northern Exposure , which includes drummer Jim Black , trumpeter Dave Ballou and saxophonist Henrik Frisk . He also worked as a sideman a. a. with Jane Ira Bloom , Uri Caine , Marty Ehrlich , James Emery , Lee Konitz , Kevin Mahogany , the Mingus Big Band , the New York Jazz Collective , Daniel Schnyder , Lafayette Gilchrist , John Dierker and Jack Walrath . Formanek recorded an album for ECM in 2010 with Craig Taborn and Gerald Cleaver . ; In 2020 he released the album Pre-Apocalyptic (Out of Our Head), which he recorded with Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Gerald Cleaver.

Formanek teaches at the Baltimore Peabody Conservatory. ,
