Lafayette F. Gilchrist (born August 3, 1967 ) is an American jazz pianist and composer .

Gilchrist grew up in Baltimore , studied at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County . An early mentor was the music teacher Carl Grubbs in the early 1990s . He began his career as a composer for the US TV series The Wire ; he then worked u. a. with David Murray ( Live in Berlin - Black Saint Quartet , 2008), Mihály Dresch , Louis Moholo , Sabir Mateen , Gerald Cleaver and Hamid Drake . In 2004 he presented his debut album The Music According to Lafayette Gilchrist with Hyena Records after he had released two self-distributed albums before 2002. In 2006 he participated in the remix of Benny Golson's Minor Vamp (Basement Boys Remix), which was released on the sampler Re-Bop: The Savoy Remixes . William Parker recorded two of his compositions in 2010 ( I Plan to Stay a Believer, If There's a Hell Below ). His film composition Assume the Position appeared in 2008 on the Nonesuch compilation The Wire "... And All the Pieces Matter" - Five Years of Music from The Wire .

Gilchrist is currently working with his trio Inside Out (with Michael Formanek and Eric Kennedy ), his band The New Volcanoes and an octet that includes go-go, soul, funk and hip-hop.

Awards

His album Soul Progression won the 2008 Independent Music Awards . In 2011 he was nominated for the Baker Artists Awards from the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund .
