Alan Ferber
Alan Ferber (* 18th January 1975 in Oakland , California ) is an American jazz - trombonist , composer and bandleader .
Life
Ferber came into contact with jazz from childhood; his grandmother was a Broadway actress who also sang jazz standards . Like his brother, drummer Mark Ferber , he first played the piano, but switched to the trombone during his time in high school. Early inspiration came from the Blue Note hardbo albums by JJ Johnson , John Coltrane and Art Blakey . The brothers both studied in New York; Alan Ferber graduated in 1997 and has been a session musician in New York since the late 1990s, with artists such as Paul Anka , Nancy Sinatra , Dr. Dre , They Might Be Giants , Diana Krall and various Broadway shows, in the field of jazz with Kenny Wheeler ( Sweet Ruby Suite ), in the Lee Konitz Nonett, with Don Byron , Bennie Wallace , John Hollenbeck , in the Anthomy Wilson Trio and for a Year in the band of Charlie Hunter , who became an important mentor to him in the early 2000s. In 2018 he starred in Mike Holober's Grammy-nominated production Hiding Out .
In 2005, Fresh Sound (New Talent) produced his first album Scenes from an Exit Row ; In the 2009 work Music for Nonet and Strings: Chamber Songs, he combined his jazz nonet (with Jon Gordon and Scott Wendholt, among others ) with a string ensemble. As a music educator, he was professor in residence at the Gremio das Musicas Jazz Workshop in Portugal, as well as at the Bar Harbor Brass Week , the Maine Jazz Camp and the Guimarais Jazz Festival . Ferber is a founding member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground music cooperative .
