bHiding Out -

Hiding Out is a jazz album by Mike Holober and the 17-piece Gotham Jazz Orchestra . The recordings were made in New York City in 2018; the album was released on August 9, 2019 on the label Zoho Music LLC .

background

Holober had previously worked in a number of lineups in solo, duo, quintet formats and with larger ensembles. With his Gotham Jazz Orchestra he had recorded both albums Thought Trains (Sons of Sound Records, 2004) and Quake ( Sunnyside Records , 2009), both of which contained cover versions as well as original compositions by Holober. Holober wrote all material for Hiding Out with one exception, two takes of a composition by Antonio Carlos Jobim . Various musicians belong to both Holober's and Maria Schneider's orchestras ; these include trumpeter Tony Kadleck and saxophonists Charles Pillow and Tim Ries . Other musicians are members of the Pete McGuinness ' Jazz Orchestra, whose bandleader played in the suite "Flow". The soloists are guitarist Steve Cardenas , trumpeter Marvin Stamm , saxophonists Jon Gordon and Jason Rigby, and Holober himself.

The album begins with the 13-minute "Jumble", with Holober on the Fender Rhodes , Jon Gordon and guitarist Jesse Lewis as soloists. The subsequent "Flow" suite was commissioned for the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, which Holober had previously directed for six years. It addresses the beauty of the lower valley of the Hudson River . The following suite, "Hiding Out", was commissioned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and influenced by the wilderness of Wyoming . The album ends with Jobim's "Caminhos Cruzados", a feature for the lyrical trumpet by Marvin Stamm.

reception

Mike Holober with the Hr-Bigband at the German Jazz Festival 2015

The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in late 2019 .

Karl Ackermann ( All About Jazz ) wrote, “ Hiding Out is an homage to nature and to those who explore, preserve and appreciate it. Holober paints a picture that requires neither tsunamis nor hurricanes. In doing so, he relies on the natural flow of everyday events and is sensible and subtle. As it should be, the music has that organic feel that Hoboler and his quintet successfully explored on Canyon (Sons of Sound, 2003). His worldview is shaped by rich experience as an environmental activist, jazz ambassador for the US State Department, and an ongoing role as a jazz professor at New York City College. In Hiding Out , Holober composes under the influence of what he knows best - music and nature. "

Nigel Jarrett wrote in the Jazz Journal , "Flow" shows a trip down the Hudson towards Harlem, but Holober does not set a juggernaut free. With parts of the orchestra and without hurry, he describes the natural world upstream from Manhattan. Only the breadth of the Appalachians 0 is the reason to release his battalions. An interlude with the woodwind player Ben Kono on the whistle merges into the last movement of Harlem. Billy Drewes (alto saxophone), Scott Wendholt (trumpet) and Holober (piano) lead the way home. In the five-part Hiding Out , as much of the picturesque is reflected as Holober's talent for reflection, the vivid representation and the contrast of the timbre allow. His soloists (including guitarist Steve Cardenas, Jon Gordon on alto saxophone and Adam Kolker on tenor), whose virtuosity rather en passant draws attention to itself, fit well again. When it comes to comparing Duke Ellington and Gil Evans , Holober can reach the full potential of his troupe.

According to Ed Enright ( Down Beat ), with the release of “this long-awaited, epic work, Holober has brought a profound artistic vision to today's jazz scene and established himself as one of the finest modern day composers / arrangers in the tradition of Gil Evans, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely confirmed.
