Charles Pillow

Charles Pillow (* around 1960 in Roanoke , Virginia ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , also oboe , English horn , bass clarinet , arrangement ).

Live and act

Pillow grew up in Baton Rouge . He first studied at Loyola University New Orleans and then completed his master's degree at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (New York) . He worked in the New York jazz scene from the early 1980s; first recordings were made in 1983 with Bevan Manson ( Metaphysical Rhumba ). In the following years he belonged to a number of big bands and jazz ensembles, including the Alan Ferber Nonet, Bob Mintzer Big Band, David Liebman Big Band, John Fedchock New York Big Band, Maria Schneider Orchestra , Michael Brecker Quindectet, Michael Leonhart Orchestra , Ted Nash Big Band, The Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra and the Tony Kadleck Big Band. In 2018 he starred in Mike Holober's Grammy-nominated production Hiding Out . He was previously involved in three Grammy-awarded albums, Michael Brecker's Wide Angles , Maria Schneider's Concert in the Garden, and Joe Henderson's Big Band .

Under his own name he presented several albums such as Currents (1987), Pictures at an Exhibition (2005) and a reworking of Gustav Holst's The Planets (2008); He also directed the Charles Pillow Large Ensemble and presented the album Van Gogh Letters (2011) in a trio with Jim Ridl and Gary Versace . In the field of jazz he was involved in 111 recording sessions between 1993 and 2017, according to Tom Lord . He teaches as a college professor at the Eastman School of Music.
