Mike Holober (born January 1, 1957 ) is an American jazz pianist , composer , arranger , big band leader and university lecturer.

Mike Holober has a classical pianist and conductor training; he came to New York in 1986 and began to work with jazz musicians, first with Nick Brignola , then with the Hr-Bigband , the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra , Airmen of Note, Joe Roccisano and the New York Saxophone Quartet . He also played with Tim Ries and his Rolling Stones Project , with John Patitucci , Pete McGuinness , Dave Pietro , Charles Pillow , Wolfgang Muthspiel , Brian Blade , Scott Colley , John Abercrombie , Joe Magnarelli , Tim Hagans , Peter Erskine , John Patitucci, and more as a guest soloist with the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, the RIAS Big Band Berlin and the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Helsinki.

In 2003 his debut album Canyon was released , produced by Fred Hersch . His own band projects include The Gotham Jazz Orchestra , with whom he released the 2005 album Thought Trains (with Ron Carter as guest soloist) and Quake (2009). Holober was deputy head of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop , in which he a. a. worked with Bob Brookmeyer , Manny Albam and Jim McNeely . He currently heads the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, which is run as a nonprofit organization and regularly performs with commissioned compositions, for example on a tour of Venezuela in 2005 on behalf of the State Department . His album Hiding Out received a Grammy nomination in the category Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in late 2019 . In addition, since 1995 he has been Assistant Professor at City College of New York, where he leads jazz ensembles and holds courses in composition and arrangement. From 2004 he was composer in residence for the Gotham Wind Symphony .
