Tim Ries

Tim Ries (* 1960 ) is an American jazz - saxophonist and university teachers . He became best known with two albums from his Rolling Stones project (2005 and 2008).

Life and work

Tim Ries came from a musical family in the Detroit area . His father Jack Ries was a professional trumpeter, his mother played the piano and his three sisters sang and played the piano as well. In 1971, at a young age, he became a member of the Michigan All State Band in Ann Arbor . During the 1970s he continued to take saxophone lessons with, among others, Lynn Klock and Larry Teal at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Ries received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas, Denton in 1981 . Three years later he laid at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor the master -degree in saxophone after. His instrument teacher at Ann Arbor College was Donald Sinta . He later learned from 1986-88 with David Liebman in New York City and 1996-1999 with Michael Brecker in Hastings-on-Hudson . His main teachers in jazz composition included William Bolcom from the University of Michigan (1982-84) and Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam from the BMI Composers Workshop (1988-90).

From 1982 to 1984 Ries himself taught jazz improvisation at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In the 1990s he made it his job. The stations were the University of Bridgeport (1994), the Mannes School of Music (1994-1996), The New School (1995-98), the City College of New York (1995-2000), the New Jersey City University (2003 ), Rutgers University (2003-05). Most recently, he was Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Toronto from 2007-09.

Ries has released five albums under his own name over the years. In addition, the pianist Franck Amsallem has recorded several albums with him. He has performed with numerous jazz musicians such as Phil Woods , Tom Harrell , Al Foster , John Patitucci , Dave Liebman, Danilo Pérez , Maynard Ferguson , Red Garland , Badal Roy , Maria Schneider and Donald Byrd . In 2018 he worked on Mike Holober's Grammy- nominated production Hiding Out .

Ries was one of the founding members of the Prism Quartet , along with Michael Whitcombe on alto saxophone, Matt Levy on tenor saxophone and Taimur Sullivan on baritone saxophone. He himself contributed the soprano saxophone. In 2000 the combo presented the album Real Standard Time .

On the tour with the Rolling Stones 2002–03, Ries played saxophones, keyboards and organ. As an arranger , he wrote jazz versions of the compositions by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. These appeared on two albums after the tour A Bigger Bang world tour 2005-2007 with the Stones. In 2019 he is a member of the Kálmán Oláh Quartet (with John Hébert and Johnathan Blake ).

As a composer , Ries has presented over a hundred pieces of his own. With the Prism Quartet he has performed William Bolcom's “Concerto Grosso” with 13 orchestras, including those from Detroit, Dallas and Cleveland. As a saxophonist, he was also involved in the US premiere of Takashi Yoshimatsu's “Cyberbird Concerto” with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall .
