Franck Amsallem

Franck Amsallem (* 25. October 1961 in Oran ) is a French jazz - pianist and composer .

Life

Amsallem was born in Algeria , but grew up in Nice , learned to play the piano at the age of seven and also studied classical saxophone at the local conservatory. He then moved to the United States in the early 1980s , where he studied at Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music ; there he worked a. a. with Blood, Sweat & Tears , Harry Belafonte , Jerry Bergonzi , Rick Margitza , Bobby Watson , Gerry Mulligan , Joshua Redman , Maria Schneider and Charles Lloyd . In 1992 his first album Out a Day was released on the OMD label. He has lived in Paris since the early 2000s and has since released a number of albums, including a. with Tim Ries , Joe Chambers .

His composition Obstinated was performed by the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra . He has also written for the WDR Big Band Cologne and the Orchester National de Jazz .

Prizes and awards

Amsallem was awarded the Fondation de la Vocation Award in 1989 , the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to compose works for string orchestra in 1990 and the ASCAP Award For Young Composer in 1990.
