Al Foster (born January 18, 1943 in Richmond , Virginia ), also known as A. Foster , Aloysius 'Al' Foster , Aloysius Foster and Foster , is an American jazz drummer.

Foster grew up in New York City , where he learned to play the drums self-taught. He worked with Hugh Masekela at the age of sixteen , later with Ted Curson and Illinois Jacquet , recorded (with full name Aloysius Foster ) with Blue Mitchell on Blue Note the album The Thing to Do and appeared around 1966 with Lou Donaldson and Kai Winding up.

In 1972 Miles Davis heard him performing at the Cellar Club in Manhattan and brought him into his band. The collaboration lasted until 1985; During this time, Foster worked on ten albums by the Miles Davis Band, such as the 1974/75 live albums Dark Magus and Pangea .

After that he was in the bands of Herbie Hancock , Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson and worked with musicians like Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard , McCoy Tyner , Wayne Shorter , Bobby Hutcherson , John Scofield , Pat Metheny , Charlie Haden , Randy and Michael Brecker , Bill Evans , George Benson , Kenny Drew , Carmen McRae , Stan Getz , Toots Thielemans , Dexter Gordon , Chick Corea , Thelonious Monk , Dave Holland , Tibor Elekes , Branford Marsalis , Sting , John McLaughlin , Michel Petrucciani and Dexter Gordon. In recent times he has often been a partner of Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner and has led his own quartet, which has also been heard several times in Germany.
