Joe Roccisano

Joseph Lucian "Joe" Roccisano (born October 5, 1939 in Springfield , Massachusetts , † November 9, 1997 in New York City ) was an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , soprano saxophone and flute ) and arranger.

Roccisano received his bachelor's degree in music education from the State University of New York-Potsdam in 1963. In 1964 he played in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Sam Donahue , then he moved to Los Angeles , where he played in the bands of Don Ellis (1966-68), Ray Charles (1967-68), Louie Bellson , Lew Tabackin , Toshiko Akiyoshi , Terry Gibbs , Don Menza , Bill Holman and Don Rader played. In 1976 he put together his own 15-person ensemble, Rocbop , and in 1981 also played in Frank Capp's band - Nat Pierce Juggernaut .

Roccisano also worked as arranger for Don Ellis, Bellson, Doc Severinsen and Woody Herman ; so he arranged the track "Green Earrings" for the Herman album Chick, Donald, Walter, and Woodrow ; he was nominated for a Grammy Award for it. He also composed the song "Tenors of the Time" recorded by Pete Christlieb and Warne Marsh .

Shortly before his death in October 1997 he recorded the album Joe Roccisano Nonet for the Double Time label , on which u. a. Greg Gisbert , Conrad Herwig , Tim Ries , Bill Charlap and Terry Clarke participated and played arrangements by Roccisano, a. a. an interpretation of the standard “Some Other Time” or Henry Mancini's “Charade”.
