Pete Christlieb

Pete Christlieb (born February 16, 1945 in San Francisco ) is an American musician ( tenor saxophone , flute, clarinet and bass clarinet) of modern jazz , who mainly works as a studio musician.

Live and act

Christlieb comes from a family of musicians and received violin lessons from the age of seven. He learned the saxophone in high school and then studied music theory and composition in college. In 1963 and 1964 he played with Jerry Gray , then with Chet Baker and Si Zentner , before he gained big band experience with Woody Herman , Louis Bellson and, briefly, Count Basie . He then worked as a studio musician and recorded for Elvis Presley , Diane Schuur , Tom Waits and Steely Dan as well as for Sarah Vaughn , Shelly Manne , Quincy Jones , Ray Barretto and Rosemary Clooney . From 1972 to 1992 he appeared as a member of Doc Severinsen's band on the Tonight Show . Since 1971 he has repeatedly presented his own jazz publications. According to Kunzler, he demonstrated his creativity on several recordings in a quartet and quintet with Warne Marsh ( e.g. Apogee from 1979). He currently leads his own quartet and tentet, The Tall and Small Group, and works regularly with Bill Holman .
