Bill Charlap

Bill Charlap (* 15. October 1966 in New York ; full name William Morrison Charlap ) is an American jazz - pianist .

Bill Charlap began playing the piano at the age of three. He comes from a musical family; his mother, Sandy Stewart, is a singer and his father was Broadway composer Morrison "Moose" Charlap. Charlap later recorded the duet album "Love Is Here to Stay" with his mother.

He later studied classical music, but remained connected to jazz. At the beginning of his professional career he worked with Gerry Mulligan , Benny Carter , Tony Bennett and others. In 1995 he became a member of Phil Woods ' quintet. After that he formed his own formations with which he created his first albums under his own name on Criss Cross Jazz and Chiaroscuro . In the 1990s Charlap formed a piano trio that included bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington and also performed at New York's Village Vanguard jazz club . He recorded a total of six albums as a leader for the Blue Note label, including the two Grammy- nominated CDs Somewhere , (which deals with the music of Leonard Bernstein ), and The Bill Charlap Trio, Live at the Village Vanguard . In 2002, Blue Note recorded the album Stardust with guests Frank Wess , Shirley Horn and Tony Bennett . Under the name New York Trio (with bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Bill Stewart ) Charlap has recorded various albums since 2001 (which were released exclusively in Japan). In 2013 he worked with a nonet in the style of Birth of the Cool , which included Frank Wess, Bucky Pizzarelli , Jeremy Pelt and the singer Mary Stallings .

Bill Charlap has also been artistic director of New York's 92nd Street Jazz in July program and singer Mary Cleere Haran since 2004, when he took over from Dick Hyman . He has been married to the Canadian jazz pianist Renee Rosnes since 2007 .

In 2015 Charlap recorded an album with Tony Bennett of Jerome Kern compositions under the title The Silver Lining . It was recognized in the 2016 Grammy Awards for Best Singing Album - Traditional Pop .
