Sean Smith (bassist)
Sean Smith (* 1965 in Greenwich , Connecticut ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , composition ) of modern jazz . According to Judith Schlesinger ( Allmusic ), the "harmonious, flowing and elegant" playing bassist is one of the busiest musicians on the international jazz scene.
Live and act
Smith began learning alto saxophone in fourth grade , then switched to electric bass and played rock 'n' roll before eventually finding his way to double bass in high school and getting into jazz music. He was heavily influenced by Miles Davis and Weather Report - notably Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius . In 1990 he graduated from the Manhattan School of Music and worked in the New York jazz scene from the early 1980s; first recordings were made in 1984 with guitarist Greg Packham. In the following years he played with Allen Lowe ( For Poor BB and Others ... ), Virginia Mayhew , Richard Peaslee and with the pianist Bill Charlap , with whom he released a duo album in 1993 with standards such as " Donna Lee ", " Darn That Dream " and "When Your Lover Has Gone" recorded. He also worked with Jon Gordon , Bob Kindred , Carol Sloane , Flip Phillips , Bill Mays , Peter Leitch , Peter Brainin , Gene Bertoncini , Mark Murphy and Brian Browne in the 1990s .
In 1999 the debut album Sean Smith Quartet Live! recorded on SS Norway ; there was his quartet with Allen Mezquida (alto saxophone), Bill Charlap and Ron Vincent (drums). Two other albums under his own name followed. From the 2000s he worked on recordings by Jacky Terrasson , Frank Vignola & Joe Ascione ( The Frank & Joe Show , with Dr. John , among others ), Anita O'Day , John Stetch , Rigmor Gustafsson , Eddie Higgins , Daniel Guggenheim and Amy London with. In the field of jazz he was involved in 57 recording sessions between 1984 and 2018, most recently (2018) with Renee Rosnes .
Smith also composes for the film.
Prizes and awards
Smith received a Bistro Award for Outstanding Instrumentalist in 2007 . His ensemble received the CMA / ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2015. The Song for the Geese , composed by Smith, is the title track of a Mark Murphy album that was nominated for a Grammy . The album Into the Blue by Emmanuel Pahud and Jacky Terrasson, in which he was involved as a bass player, was also nominated for a Grammy.
