Jacky Terrasson (* 27. November 1965 in Berlin as Jacques-Laurent Terrasson ) is a French-American Jazz -Pianist.

Live and act

The son of a French computer specialist and an American interior designer received classical piano training in Paris. From 1986 he studied at the Berklee College of Music in the USA. After appearing in clubs in Chicago , he became a member of Art Taylor's band in 1991 . During a recording he met Betty Carter , whom he then accompanied as a pianist for almost a year. In 1996 he was the pianist and arranger of Jimmy Scott's album Heaven ; In 1997 he recorded a rendezvous with Cassandra Wilson . He also accompanied Dianne Reeves and Dee Dee Bridgewater as pianists. He also worked on albums by Rigmor Gustafsson , Stefon Harris , Stefano Di Battista , Charles Aznavour and Tom Harrell .

Since the mid-1990s he has led the Jacky Terrasson Trio , in which he was accompanied by Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Leon Parker on drums, formed in 2012 by Burniss Travis on bass and Justin Faulkner (drums).

Prizes and awards

In 1993 Terrasson won the Thelonious Monk Award as "Most Talented Pianist" at the international jazz competition held annually for a group of instruments . In 1995 his first album Jacky Terrasson was awarded the Prix ​​Boris Vian by the Académie du Jazz . In 2003, the same institution awarded him the Prix ​​Django Reinhardt as French jazz musician of the year. Also in 2003 he received the Les Victoires du Jazz award for Smile as the best French jazz album of the year. The album Into the Blue , which he arranged and recorded together with Emmanuel Pahud , was nominated for a Grammy in the same year . In 2020 his album 53 was on the quarterly best list of the German Record Critics' Award .
