The Girl Nanami ( Japanese 初恋 ・ 地獄 篇 Hatsukoi: Jigoku-hen , literally: First Love: Hell Chapter ) is a Japanese feature film from 1968. Susumu Hani directed and wrote the screenplay for the drama together with Shūji Terayama . The Art Theater Guild company produced the film. The focus of The Girl Nanami is the love affair between a teenage girl working in the sex business and her boyfriend, who had a traumatic childhood. Akio Takahashi and Kuniko Ishii played the leading roles.
action
The teenage nude model Nanami and his friend Shun go to a " love hotel " to have sex together for the first time. Shun reveals his love to Nanami. Sexual intercourse does not take place because Shun does not produce an erection. Nanami understands that. Because of Nanami's empathy towards him, Shun remembers traumatic events from his childhood. His mother left him and he was adopted by a married couple.
The two return to their everyday lives. Shun is undergoing psychotherapy treatment during which he remembers his foster father abusing him as a child. Shun befriends the girl Naomi, who is about the same age as he was when he was molested.
Nanami and other women play erotic games with yakuza in a club. Shun watches this and becomes jealous. The two want to meet again in a hotel and Shun shaves his hair for the meeting. He also meets Naomi and seems to have come to terms with his traumatic childhood.
The yakuza meet Shun and ask him how to get to Nanami. He runs away from them and is hit by a car. He dies. Nanami watched his death from the hotel window.

In June of the same year he was seen in the competition for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival , but did not win any of the awards given at the festival. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, theatrical releases followed in several other countries, such as on June 10, 1969 in the United States and in September 1970 in France.
reception
Many film critics viewed The Girl Nanami as one of the best works of Hani, while others criticized it for being too commercial and exploitative . Roger Greenspun wrote in the New York Times in 1969 that he liked the film. The erotic scenes in the club are one of the most complex and beautiful erotic film scenes that he has seen.
Jasper Sharp said in Midnight Eye that the film was "a vivid description of a young man's first steps into the dark and mysterious realm of sexuality." It was "gross" , "irresistible" and "surreal" . The film is "both a sensitive psychological study and a nightmarish portrait of restricted sexuality."
