Akio Yashiro

Akio Yashiro ( Japanese 矢 代 秋 雄 Yashiro Akio ; born September 10, 1929 in Tokyo , † April 9, 1976 in Yokohama ) was a Japanese composer .

Life

As early as 1940, he received composition lessons from Saburō Moroi . Then he studied music theory and composition at Tōkyō Ongaku Gakkō with Saburō Moroi, Kunihiko Hashimoto , Yujiro Ikeuchi and Akira Ifukube, as well as piano with Noboru Toyomasu , Leonid Kreutzer and Kiyo Kawakami . He completed his courses in 1949 and graduated in 1951.

He went abroad with Toshiro Mayuzumi and studied - thanks to a scholarship from the French government - at the Conservatoire National Superieur in Paris with Nadia Boulanger , Tony Aubin and Olivier Messiaen . He received first prize in the subject of harmony and achieved excellent grades in the other subjects of counterpoint , fugue and piano accompaniment .

After he returned to Japan in 1956, his string quartet , which had already been composed in France, was successfully premiered and was awarded the 8th Mainichi Music Prize. His piano concerto (1964–1967) was even awarded two prizes, the 16th  Otaka Prize and the 21st  National Art Festival Award .

In 1968 he was first assistant professor at the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku (the successor institution of his alma mater) and at the Tōhō Gakuen Daigaku and was appointed full professor in 1974.

His compositions are stylistically somewhere between Maurice Ravel and Henri Dutilleux .
