Matthew Thomas Stevens (born January 8, 1982 in Toronto ) is a Canadian jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Stevens grew up in Toronto and studied at the Etobicoke School of the Arts there, before continuing his studies at Berklee College of Music . There he took lessons from Joe Lovano , Pat Metheny , Mick Goodrick , Wayne Krantz , Dave Samuels , Hal Crook and Yakov Gubanov . From the end of the 2000s he worked in the New York jazz scene a. a. with Christian Scott , with whom the first recordings were made in 2009 ( Yesterday You Said Tomorrow ), also with Jacky Terrasson ( Push ), Ben Williams , Chet Doxas ( Dive , 2012), Jamire Williams (ERIMAJ: Conflict of a Man ), Harvey Mason ( Chameleon ), Michael Oien ( And Now , 2014), Esperanza Spalding ( Emily's D + Evolution , 12 Little Spells ( Grammy 2020 )) and 2015/16 with Jamie Reynolds ( Gray Mirror ).

In May 2014 Stevens recorded his debut album Woodwork for Whirlwind Records ; Gerald Clayton (piano), Vicente Archer (bass), Eric Doob (drums) and Paula Stagnaro (percussion) played in his band . This was followed in 2017 by the album Preverbal (Crystal Math), which John Fordham rated in the Guardian as a “subtle, clever fusion ” with a combination of the soundscapes of John Scofield and Bill Frisell . Together with Walter Smith III , Joel Ross , Harish Raghavan and Marcus Gilmore he released the album In Common in 2018 , followed by In Common 2 (2020).

In the field of jazz, Stevens was involved in 17 recording sessions between 2009 and 2019.
