Marcus Gilmore (* 1986 ) is an American jazz drummer.

Gilmore is the grandson of the drummer Roy Haynes , who gave him his first lessons, who gave him his first drum kit at the age of ten and gave him a solo performance in Birdland, New York in 2002 after the performance of his Fountain of Youth Band. Gilmore grew up in Hollis, Queens . He studied at the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan , courses at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music . He also took lessons from Steve Coleman at the age of fifteen, and Gilmore has played in his bands over the years. He has been playing professionally since 2004/05 with, among others, Kenny Garrett , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Nicholas Payton , Ambrose Akinmusire , Yosvany Terry , Ravi Coltrane , John Clayton , Branford Marsalis , Wycliffe Gordon , Roy Hargrove , as well as with the veterans Clark Terry and Jimmy Heath and Ray Barretto , and jazz vocalists Cassandra Wilson and Gretchen Parlato .

In 2012, he won the Down Beat Critic's Poll in the Rising Star category for drums. In the same year the Vijay Iyer Trio, to which he belongs, was named Jazz Band of the Year and received the Jazz Album of the Year award for Accelerando - as for their 2009 debut Historicity .

He played in a trio with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke , toured with Corea and recorded with him (including the 2012 concert for jazz quintet and chamber orchestra, The Continents ). In 2018 he is a member of the Vijay Iyer Sextet.
