Hal Crook

Hal Crook (* 1950 ) is an American jazz trombonist .

As a child, Crook had a classical piano training. Until 1971 he studied at Berklee College of Music . He then taught contemporary music at the Rhode Island School of Music and founded the Rhode Island School of Performing Music with drummer Artie Cabral in 1976 . He has given courses at the University of Rhode Island and has taught at the University of California in Los Angeles and San Diego .

In 1982, Crook founded the San Diego School of Performing Music (later JazzSchool ), where he taught until 1986. Then he became a professor at Berklee College, where he teaches arrangement, composition, improvisation and ensemble playing, among other things. Between 1998 and 2005 he was also visiting artist in residence at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz . He published several textbooks on jazz improvisation and recorded several instructional CDs.

Crook composed and arranged a. a. for Phil Woods , Clark Terry , Herb Pomeroy , Louis Bellson , Artie Shaw , Duke Belaire , Dick Johnson and Nick Brignola and has written collections of compositions for jazz ensembles, a selection was published under the title The Music of Hal Crook - 35 Jazz Originals .

He was a member of the Phil Woods Quintet and has performed with musicians such as Jerry Bergonzi , George Cables , Joe Diorio , Bill Dobbins , Joe Farrell , George Garzone , Mick Goodrick , Tom Harrell , Woody Herman , John Hicks , Milton Hinton , Thad Jones , Paul Motian , Adam Nussbaum , Lew Tabackin , Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer , Daniel Humair and John Medeski . As a band leader and sideman, he has recorded more than forty albums. With his own band Um (with Bob Gullotti , Leo Genovese and Dave Zinno ) he performed weekly in Providence (Rhode Island) between 1994 and 2008 .
