Walter Schmocker

Walter Schmocker (born January 4, 1953 in Ringgenberg BE ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( double bass ).

Live and act

Schmocker studied at the Swiss Jazz School from 1974 to 1980. In 1978 he founded the Swiss Jazz Quintet with Heiner Althaus , which has toured internationally several times and released several albums. He was also a member of Joe Haider's trio (1982/83) and was with Charly Antolini (1983/84) and between 1984 and 1997 several times with bands around Hannibal Marvin Peterson . In 1988 he founded his own group S.Double U & The Jaks . He also worked with Woody Shaw (1987/88), Erich Kleinschuster (1988), Chet Baker (1988), Joanne Brackeen (1988 to 1995) and Joey Calderazzo . He also played concerts and tours with Buddy Tate , Carrie Smith , Milt Buckner , Art Blakey , Joe Henderson , Charlie Byrd , Aki Takase , Sam Rivers , Gene Jackson , Victor Lewis , Barry Altschul , Adam Nussbaum and Beaver Harris .

Schmocker has given concerts at numerous festivals such as the Kool Jazz Festival Detroit , the JazzFest Berlin , North Sea Jazz Festival , Montreux Jazz Festival , the Jazz Week Burghausen Saalfelden and in Carnegie Hall New York. In 1989 he initiated the Master Class for Jazz Improvisation in Langnau im Emmental and was able to engage well-known musicians such as Hal Crook and Jerry Bergonzi for these workshops , with whom he also performed. In addition, he founded the Langnauer Jazz Nights, a unique festival in Europe dedicated to jazz education, which he has directed to this day (2009). He also initiated a youth jazz orchestra.

Prizes and awards

In 2003 Schmocker received a recognition award from the Canton of Bern for his jazz pedagogical work.
