Carrie Smith
Carrie Louise Smith (born August 25, 1941 in Fort Gaines , Georgia , † May 20, 2012 in Newark (New Jersey) ) was an American jazz and blues singer .
Live and act
Smith sang in her father's church in Newark as a child and performed with their gospel choir at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival . In 1970 she began a career as a professional singer with the blues pianist Big Tiny Little ; She then went on tour with Tyree Glenn in 1973 and recorded the album "Satchmo Remembered" in 1974 with Dick Hyman at Carnegie Hall . She toured Europe several times with the New York Jazz Repertory Company and then with The World's Greatest Jazz Band . Art Farmer and Budd Johnson performed on their album "Carrie Smith" (1978) . She continued to work with Ram Ramirez , Sweets Edison , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Jay McShann, and time and again with Yank Lawson . She played in the Broadway musical Black and Blue from 1989 to 1991 . In 1992, pianist Marcus Roberts placed them at the center of his homage to Bessie Smith . She also performed with her own gospel choirs.
