Ram Ramirez

Roger "Ram" Ramirez (* as Roger Amares on 15. September 1913 in San Juan (Puerto Rico) ; † 13. January 1994 ) was an American jazz - pianist and composer of Swing . Together with Jimmy Davis he composed the jazz standard Lover Man .

Live and act

In 1920 he immigrated to the USA. At the beginning of his career, Ramirez played in 1933 with the Louisiana Stompers , the Spirits of Rhythm and Monette Moore. In 1934 he worked for Rex Stewart , in 1936 for Willie Bryant and in 1937/38 he went on tour with Bobby Martin in Europe. He then worked in Ella Fitzgerald's orchestra , with Ike Quebec , where he was involved in the tracks She's Funny That Way, Tiny's Exercises, Blue Harlem, Mad About You, Facin 'The Face (1944). He later played with John Kirby and various smaller formations in New York and accompanied Helen Humes . In 1946 he recorded Ellington's compositions Prelude to a Kiss , Sophisticated Lady and Dancers In Love as a trio (with Jimmy Shirley and Al Hall ) . From 1953 he turned to the organ. In the 1960s he toured with T-Bone Walker (also in Europe) and in the 1970s with the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band ; he also performed in clubs such as the West End Cafe . In 1981 he joined during the Kool Jazz Festival in Carnegie Hall on.

His composition Lover Man (1944), written with Jimmy Davis and Jimmy Sherman , made a. a. Billie Holiday to a jazz standard .
