Grégoire Maret (born May 13, 1975 in Geneva ) is a Swiss harmonica player who has emerged primarily in the jazz field .

Live and act

Maret, who loved the sound of the harmonica as a child, did not begin to play the instrument until he was 17. His father, who played the banjo in a Dixieland band and listened to records by Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, brought him to jazz early. He first studied at the conservatory in his hometown before continuing his studies at the jazz department of The New School in New York. He stayed in New York, where he worked early as a session musician with David Sanborn , Meshell Ndegeocello and Jacky Terrasson and in the group of Steve Coleman . The Swiss filmmaker Frédéric Baillif portrayed him in his documentary Sideman (2005). That same year, Maret toured with Pat Metheny's band , with whom he recorded the Grammy- winning album The Way Up . With Andy Milne he presented the duo album Scenarios (2007). After traveling with Marcus Miller , he became a member of Herbie Hancock's band . Then he directed the Trio Gaïa , which included pianist Federico Gonzales Peña and drummer Gene Lake . In 2010 Maret played at the Concert for the Rainforest with Elton John and Sting .

For his self-titled debut album he invited guests like Cassandra Wilson , Marcus Miller, Raul Midón , the singers Mark Kibble and Alvin Chea from Take 6 and Toots Thielemans . The album Wanted followed in 2016 . He is also involved in albums by Cassandra Wilson, Veit Huebner , Joe Beck , George Benson , Leon Parker , Onaje Allan Gumbs and Bebel Gilberto as well as Chuck Owen's album Whispers on the Wind (2017), which was awarded in several categories for the Grammy Awards Was nominated in 2018 . Together with the harp virtuoso Edmar Castañeda , the album Harp versus Harp was created in 2018, which was released by ACT Music in 2019 .

Prizes and awards

As a player of rarely used instruments, Maret was nominated several times for the Jazz Awards of the American Jazz Journalists Association , which he won in 2014; In 2006 and 2008, he was named a "rising star" in the same category in the Down Beat critics' poll . In 2017 he was awarded a Swiss Music Prize.
