Andy Milne

Andy Milne (* 29. January 1967 in Hamilton ( Ontario )) is a Canadian pianist and keyboardist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Milne had been taking piano lessons since he was seven. From 1986 to 1990 he studied with Oscar Peterson , Pat LaBarbera and Don Thompson at York University , then at the Banff Center for Fine Arts with Steve Coleman . He played in his teachers' bands in Toronto and Montreal before moving to New York City in 1991 . There he worked with Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson , Greg Osby , Robin Eubanks , Ravi Coltrane and other musicians of the M-Base circle, but also with Geri Allen , Joe Lovano , Archie Shepp , Roy Hargrove and David Murray . He also performed with his own groups and released his debut album in 1995; In 1998 he founded the band "Dapp Theory". In 2001/02 he accompanied the singer Carla Cook on her international tour.

Milne teaches at the Stanford Jazz Workshop , but also at other American universities.

Prizes and awards

In the critical and reader polls of "Jazz Report" Milne was voted "Keyboarder of the Year 2000". He was featured as a rising star in the Down Beat poll in 2004 . He is also recognized as a composer and has received working grants and commissions from Chamber Music America .
