Carla Cook
Carla Cook (born around 1962 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American jazz singer.
Life
As a child, Cook sang in the church choir of a Methodist church in her hometown. She took private singing and piano lessons, and played the double bass in her high school orchestra. She then went to Boston, where she studied Speech Science at Northeastern University . Here she also founded her first jazz band.
In 1990 she moved to New York, where she was active in the Manhattan jazz club scene and taught social studies at a junior high school. In 1993 she taught jazz singing in Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1998 she signed a contract with the jazz label MAXJAZZ , where in 1999 her debut album All About Love was released. The CD was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Jazz Vocal Performance and received the AFIM Indie Award in 2000 .
In addition to jazz, Cook also sings rhythm and blues , rock and other songs, such as the English folk song Scarborough Fair , Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues , Bobbie Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe and Neil Young's Heart of Gold .
