Fred Wesley (born July 4, 1943 in Mobile, Alabama ) is an American trombonist .

Life

Wesley's father was a conductor of a jazz orchestra and let his son learn the trombone at an early age.

Originally from jazz , Wesley gained his first experience with Count Basie before joining James Brown in the 1960s and becoming an integral part of the brass section. For James Brown as well as for the influential side project The JB's , he was also temporarily active as a musical director. Wesley played a key role in the creation of funk music, and he and his saxophone partner Maceo Parker formed a congenial team.

In the 1970s both came to George Clinton with Pee Wee Ellis , where as Horny Horns they shaped the universe of P-Funk with sophisticated arrangements. Under this name they also released two albums of their own, Say Blow By Blow Backwards and A Blow for Me, a Toot for You .
