Clarence Penn

Clarence Penn (* 2. March 1968 in Detroit ) is an American jazz - drummer and composer .

Live and act

Penn studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and then worked a. a. with Betty Carter ( The Music Never Stops ), Ellis Marsalis , Wynton Marsalis , Jacky Terrasson , Roberta Flack , Dizzy Gillespie , Dianne Reeves , Cyrus Chestnut , Stephen Scott , Steps Ahead , Mike Stern and Rachel Z . In 1996 he recorded his debut album Penn's Landing for Criss Cross Jazz , which the New York Times selected as one of the best records of the year. In 2003 he worked on the Dave Douglas album Strange Liberation (with Bill Frisell ). In the 2000s he worked a. a. with productions by Gary Burton , Richard Galliano , Maria Schneider and Gary Versace . In 2014 he presented the Thelonious Monk project Monk, The Lost Files (with Chad Lefkowitz-Brown , Makoto Ozone and Yasushi Nakamura ). Together with the double bass player Reuben Rogers , the drummer formed the rhythm section of the Denis Gäbel Quartet on their 2019 tour of Germany.
