Denis Gäbel
Denis Gäbel (born November 11, 1979 ) is a German jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition).
Live and act
Gäbel is the younger brother of the singer Tom Gaebel and the presenter Colin Gäbel .
He himself received cello and piano lessons at an early age . Then he discovered the saxophone for himself; in 1993 at the age of 13 he received the first prize as state winner NRW at Jugend jazzt . From 1995 he studied under Dick Oatts , Ferdinand Povel , Jasper Blom and John Ruocco , including a semester abroad at the Manhattan School of Music, in a Bachelor and then a Master’s degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam . After a year in the NRW Youth Jazz Orchestra , he was a member of the Bujazzo under Peter Herbolzheimer from 1999 to 2002 .
In 2005 he moved to Cologne. In recent years he has worked in his brother's big band (also as musical director) and with his own quartet, but also with Antonio Faraò , Frank Chastenier , Dusko Goykovich , and Billy Cobham . He was a member of the Cologne Horns , Matthias Schriefls Shreefpunk plus Bigband ( Europe 2017) and the Felix Heydemann Groove Connection ( Exclusive Freak Show 2009); He is currently part of Benjamin Schaefer's big band Hive Mind , with which he also recorded an album in 2018. He has performed at international festivals such as the Burghausen Jazz Festival , the Moers Festival , the North Sea Jazz Festival , the MusikTriennale Köln , and Elbjazz . He can also be heard on the Broilers ' albums , by Axel Fischbacher and Hannah Köpf . The quartet with whom he toured in 2019 and was documented in radio recordings by Bayerischer Rundfunk and Deutschlandfunk consisted of Sebastian Sternal, Reuben Rogers and Clarence Penn .
With Michael Villmow he wrote the book Saxophone for Dummies (Wiley VCH-Verlag 2010). Since 2012 he has been teaching jazz saxophone at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .
Prizes and awards
In 2003 he took 1st place in the international jazz soloist competition “Pim Jacobs Concours” in Rotterdam. In 2016 he and his quartet were among the finalists of the New German Jazz Prize .
