New German Jazz Prize
The New German Jazz Prize is a jazz prize awarded by the IG Jazz from Mannheim . It is the only German jazz prize that is awarded based on the public vote.
Bands from Germany can apply for the prize, which was awarded for the first time in 2006, without any stylistic restrictions. A selection committee made up of jazz journalists, musicians and members of the IG Jazz makes a pre-selection ( 202 bands applied for the fifth New German Jazz Prize 2010) [1] . An internationally known jazz musician, who changes annually, works as a curator and selects finalists from the shortlist. The winner will be chosen by the audience at a concert evening in which the three finalists each play a set of approx. 40 minutes. The venue is the old fire station in Mannheim. In 2015 a composition prize was awarded for the first time, which the pianist Jürgen Friedrich received.
The main prize for the best band is endowed with 10,000 euros, the additional soloist prize with 1,000 euros. Since 2017, a new composition prize, called the New German Composition Prize , has been awarded on a regular basis and is endowed with 2,000 euros.
