Michael Wollny (born May 25, 1978 in Schweinfurt ) is a multiple award-winning German jazz pianist .

Life

Wollny had a musical education (piano, violin) at the music school in Schweinfurt and at the Hermann-Zilcher Conservatory in Würzburg until 1997 and successfully participated in the competitions of Jugend musiziert . From 1997 he studied at the University of Music in Würzburg with Chris Beier (artistic diploma with distinction in 2002, master class diploma in 2004). He also had lessons from John Taylor and Walter Norris .

Wollny was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra between 1998 and 2002 , with which he also went on tour. He was also part of Hubert Winter's quartet . A debut album appears in the trio with Wolfgang Kriener and Joachim Leyh. Since 2001 he has been playing with Heinz Sauer in a duo or quartet. He was just as successful with the Trio [em] (with Eva Kruse as bassist and Eric Schaefer on drums). He was also involved in CD productions a. a. with the Young Friends , with Hubert Winter ("Different Kind of Stories", 2003), but also Hans-Peter Salentin ( Beyond Your Thoughts , Sound of Silence ) and Nils Landgren ( The Moon, The Stars and You , 2011) as well as numerous involved in other albums published by ACT and worked as a pianist and musical assistant at the Schauspielhaus Nürnberg .

He has been under contract with the jazz label ACT since 2005 , where he made his debut with his trio em in the Young German Jazz series . In 2007 his first solo album Hexentanz, which was highly acclaimed by critics, was released . In 2014 he and his trio, which now includes bassist Tim Lefebvre in addition to Eric Schaefer , presented the album Weltentraum , which bridged the gap to pop music with ease and made it into the pop charts; the following albums also hit the charts. In 2018, Wollny was the first artist in residence in the history of the Elbjazz festival .

Wollny has lived with his family in Leipzig since 2014, where he is a professor at the University of Music and Theater .

music

Wollny is considered a great talent. What is striking in his work are the diverse references to other musicians or composers, but also to writers and film directors who permeate his music and have been gaining in importance since 2004. In view of the extraordinary wealth of external material on his album Weltentraum (2014), the question arises whether one can speak of kitsch here. Four typical and style-forming elements can be recognized in Wollny's music: 1. a clearer interest in harmony in contrast to the horizontal components of rhythm and melody , 2. the obfuscation of the meter , 3. a balance of composition and improvisation or the rejection of it the priority of improvisation, 4. a musical flow that is not disturbed by any breaks.
