Hubert Winter

Hubert Winter (* 1966 in Mainz ) is a German jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition ; also flute and bass clarinet ).

Live and act

Winter completed his instrumental studies at the Hermann Zilcher Conservatory in Würzburg with Leszek Zadlo and Chris Beier ; this was followed by a scholarship at Berklee College of Music and postgraduate studies at the New School in New York with George Garzone and Reggie Workman .

Winter has led his own quartet since 1992, initially with pianist Ben Heit, bassist Rainer Werb and Dejan Terzic . With this group he also toured internationally and released several CDs. In the following years the quartet was sometimes made up of Peter Fulda or Michael Wollny on piano, bassists Markus Schieferdecker , Felix Wiegand or Rudi Engel and drummers Paul Höchstädter and Joachim Leyh. He also appeared as a cooking trio with Höchstädter and Wiegand . He also played in a duo with Michael Wollny, documented in 2001 on the album Different Kinds of Stories . In the Würzburg Cathedral he regularly played liturgical improvisations with the organist Andreasissenbeck.

He also worked with musicians such as Bert Joris , Richie Beirach , Antonio Faraò , Randy Brecker , Louis Banks , Tony Lakatos , Dirk Mündelein , Nils Wogram , Henning Sieverts , Christopher Dell , Thomas Stabenow , Wolfgang Haffner , Wolfgang Lackerschmidt , Maria Schneider and Al Porcino together. Since it was founded in 1994, he was a member of the Sunday Night Orchestra , with whom he recorded numerous albums; he also played in other big bands , such as B. the Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion , the Summit Jazz Orchestra , the Thilo Wolf Big Band , the Bamberg Symphony Big Band or the Glenn Miller Orchestra from Wil Salden . He can also be heard on albums by Sheila Jordan / Sabine Kühlich , Rainer Glas , Michael Flügel and Patrick Lindner .

Winter also composed the music for the television film Domgeschichten Würzburg . Since the winter semester 2011/12 he has been a full-time lecturer for jazz saxophone at the University of Music in Würzburg.

Prizes and awards

In 1987 he received first prize in the international composition competition of the German Talent Exchange. His quartet was awarded the Bavarian Jazz Prize in 1993. In 1997 he was honored with the City of Nuremberg Culture Prize with the Sunday Night Orchestra . In 2002 he received the Bavarian Art Prize from the State Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts .
