Markus Schieferdecker (* 1972 in Nuremberg ) is a German bassist of modern creative jazz and a university lecturer .

Live and act

Schieferdecker, to whom a music teacher gave two jazz records in elementary school , was already fascinated by this music at the age of seven. He first learned the clarinet , followed by the saxophone and guitar . At the age of 15 he switched to the electric bass , a year later to the double bass . At the age of 18 he attended the Meistersinger Conservatory in his hometown as a young student . At that time he was jamming with Frank Möbus , Rudi Mahall , Dejan Terzic and Lutz Häfner . He then studied in Würzburg at the Hermann Zilcher Conservatory in order to continue his studies at the Cologne University of Music with Dieter Manderscheid and John Goldsby . From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra under Peter Herbolzheimer . After receiving a diploma with distinction, he was given the opportunity to continue studying in the master class, which he completed in 2004 with his concert exam.

Schieferdecker belongs to the Sunday Night Orchestra , where he also worked with Maria Schneider , Jerry Bergonzi and Benny Bailey . In 1995 Albert Mangelsdorff brought him to the German-French jazz ensemble . He also played in the group Old Friends and was involved in the last television recording of the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet in September 2004 from the Europapark Rust . He also played with Clark Terry , Lee Konitz , Bob Malach , Alex Sipiagin , Tim Hagans , Vincent Herring , Martin Sasse , Hubert Winter , Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr and Bob Degen . He was also a member of the Munich Big Band , the Summit Jazz Orchestra and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. Between 1995 and 2010 he was involved in the recordings for 20 phonograms, including albums by Bob Degen, Allan Praskin , Lutz Häfner, Andreas Dombert , Elmar Brass, Regina Litvinova and Izabella Effenberg .

Schieferdecker has been professor for jazz double bass and electric bass at the Bremen University of the Arts since 2019 .

Prizes and awards

In 1993, Schieferdecker won the Burghauser Jazz Prize and the Oberkochen music competition. In the next few years he was awarded at the jazz competitions in Bilbao, Leverkusen, Brussels and Leipzig.
