Heinz Sauer (born December 25, 1932 in Merseburg ) is a German jazz musician . For decades he has been one of the "top musicians" ( Martin Kunzler ) of jazz in Germany. His "playing the saxophone is everything: dense, wise, vital, beautiful and unpredictable."

Live and act

Sauer first studied physics and is self-taught as a musician . After his first attempts as a baritone saxophonist , Sauer decided on the tenor saxophone . Since 1960 he has been a long-time companion of Albert Mangelsdorff in his groups (until 1975) and in the " Jazz Ensemble des Hessischer Rundfunk ", from which in 1974 the group Voices with Bob Degen , Ralf Hübner , Günter Lenz and Günter Kronberg (resp . after his death in 1977 Christof Lauer ) founded. In 1980 the highly regarded duo record Ellingtonia Revisited was created together with Degen. In 1978 he was the initiator of a tenor saxophone summit at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival with his colleagues Archie Shepp and George Adams .

Since 1991, Sauer has appeared as a bandleader with groups in different line-ups (including a quartet with Hans Lüdemann as pianist, Stephan Schmolck on bass, initially with English drummer Steve Argüelles or vibraphonist Christopher Dell ). In recent years, Heinz Sauer has attracted increased attention through his collaboration with Michael Wollny . In 2005 and 2006 he released two critically acclaimed albums with Michael Wollny: Melancholia and Certain Beauty . Both albums convince through their intensity, feeling and impulsiveness.

In addition, recordings were made with the Globe Unity Orchestra (1967/70), the NDR Bigband , Volker Kriegel or the South African drummer Makaya Ntshoko or the Barrelhouse Jazzband . Sauer also plays the soprano saxophone and synthesizer, but is particularly known for the individual, hoarse sound of his tenor saxophone and the energetic and tension-laden improvisations : “Few jazz musicians are able to charge their tone formation with such uninterrupted intensity as Sauer: The tones are ejected or flow away in a mushy form like glowing lava, they still glitter and in the next moment they are pale, they are soft and beautiful or are changed with overblown colors to the point of ambiguity. "For Peter Kemper ," the throaty, grumpy sound color is the calculated syntheses of screeching abbreviations and harmonious curves "The result of Sauer's" concentration on the essentials of expression. "

Sauer lives in Königstein im Taunus .

Awards and recognitions

In 1991 he received the Jazz Prize of the State of Hessen , in 1999 the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize ( German Jazz Prize ) and was repeatedly awarded the German Record Prize for his productions . Together with Michael Wollny, he was awarded the SWR Jazz Prize in 2008 . In 2013, together with Michael Wollny, he received the Binding Culture Prize endowed with 50,000 euros .

In France, a jazz magazine chose the album Certain Beauty as album of the year 2006. On its 75th birthday, the HR2 put the focus on Sauer's musical work for 6 hours on its jazz night from December 29th to 30th, 2007.
