Wolfgang Sandner (music critic)

Wolfgang Sandner (born July 3, 1942 in Ossegg ) is a German music critic, musicologist and jazz author .

Life

Sandner has lived in Frankfurt am Main since 1947 , where he attended the Helmholtz School and then studied Romance languages, history, art history and musicology. In 1971 he did his doctorate on the clarinet with Carl Maria von Weber in musicology and was then program director and producer for contemporary music at the Schott music label Wergo and responsible for the music lexicon of Hugo Riemann , the Wiener Urtext Edition and complete editions, among other things by Richard Wagner , Arnold Schönberg , Paul Hindemith . In addition, in the 1960s he was a critic, primarily concerned with popular music, published several books on rock and jazz music and, from 1978 to 1985, lectured at the University of Frankfurt . He has been a freelance music critic since 1968, from 1968 with the Frankfurter Neue Presse and from 1970 with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , where he was music editor from 1981 to 2007 and for which he continues to write. From 2002 to 2007 he held a professorship for music theater criticism at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main , and has been teaching performance analysis at the University of Marburg since 2008 .
