Jürgen Schwab (musician)

Jürgen Schwab (born January 23, 1962 in Steinheim am Main) is a German musician (guitar, vocals), musicologist and journalist .

Life

Schwab grew up in Hanau and studied medicine , moved to the Physikum but music education , musicology and philosophy in Frankfurt and jazz guitar and - Composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston / USA, where he graduated 1,993th He then did his doctorate in 1998 with Ekkehard Jost with a musicological thesis on the guitar in jazz . On the German jazz scene he played with Emil Mangelsdorff , Klaus Göbel , Günter Lenz , Wilson de Oliveira , Dirk Raufeisen , the hr big band and Götz Ommert . With his album Today he emerged as a German-speaking singer / songwriter between folk, jazz, chanson and pop. Schwab became known to a larger audience primarily through his collaboration with Fritz Rau ; from 2005 onwards he accompanied the readings of the former concert organizer as a guitarist and singer.

As a musicologist, Schwab has written two books in addition to numerous articles, The Guitar in Jazz (1998) and a Jazz History of the City of Frankfurt ( The Frankfurt Sound - A City and Its Jazz History (s) , 2004). Jürgen Schwab worked as a journalist as a concert critic for the FAZ and for the Hessischer Rundfunk , where he moderated radio programs on the subject of jazz, among other things. Since 2016 he has been one of the three programmers of the German Jazz Festival Frankfurt.

From 1996 to 1998 Schwab was a lecturer in jazz guitar at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main and subsequently held musicological teaching positions at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen. From 2006 to 2009 he was a lecturer in jazz history at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen . In March 2018, Schwab took up a professorship at the Dieburg Media Campus at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
