The SHM-CD (short for Super High Material Compact Disc ) is a compact disc in which the conventional polycarbonate carrier has been replaced by a new type of material. This material was invented in 2006 by Universal Music Japan and JVC in an attempt to produce particularly transparent LCDs .

The manufacturer points out alleged advantages that should already be noticeable when casting the modified polycarbonate. In this way, the liquid material can be applied more precisely to the stamper , and it is advertised as reducing possible jitter when reading out the CD.

Since it is only a matter of changing the material used and the CD players adapt to the transparency of different materials, SHM CDs can be played in any normal CD player. The same error correction takes effect as with CDs.
