SWR Jazz Prize

The SWR Jazz Prize of Südwestrundfunk goes back to a joint foundation of one of its predecessors, the former Südwestfunk (SWF), and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . The prize, endowed with 15,000 euros since 2009 , was initiated by Joachim Ernst Berendt and awarded for the first time in 1981.

The jury currently (2019) consists of two music editors from SWR (Julia Neupert, Günther Huesmann ), two representatives from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate (Georg-Rudolf May, Anja Buchmann), and a member of a jazz organization ( Matthias Schubert , Union of German Jazz Musicians ) and two independent music critics (Franziska Buhre, Nina Polaschegg). It selects the winner from among jazz musicians or initiatives who have emerged during the past year through performances or new compositions.
