Sebastian Gille (born February 1, 1983 in Quedlinburg ) is a German jazz saxophonist . On the one hand he is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, but extends it with the curiosity of the sound researcher.

Live and act

Gille started playing the saxophone when he was 14. Five years later he won the 2003 Yamaha SaxContest in the jazz category. Half a year later he became a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer . In 2004 he began studying in Hamburg at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater , where he had saxophone lessons with Fiete Felsch . He also attended lessons and master classes with Phil Woods , Branford Marsalis , Donny McCaslin , John Taylor , Bobo Stenson , Ben Monder and John Ruocco . He graduated in 2012.

Since 2008 Gille has occasionally been a guest soloist with the NDR Bigband ; so he worked on the album by João Bosco with the NDR Bigband ( Senhoras do Amazonas, Enja ).

Gille, described by Hamburger Abendblatt as the “most remarkable Hamburg jazz musician for a long time”, toured with Al Jarreau , Steve Swallow , Adam Nussbaum , Norma Winstone , Bob Brookmeyer , Nils Landgren , Vladyslav Sendecki , Claus Stötter , Nils Wogram , Jim Black , Mike Gibbs and Dré Pallemaerts . In 2007 the British composer and arranger Steve Gray engaged Gille for a project with the pianist Abdullah Ibrahim .

In 2009 Gille founded his own quartet with Pablo Held , Robert Landfermann and Jonas Burgwinkel , whose debut album Anthem was released by Pirouet in 2011 . In addition to original compositions, it also contains interpretations of the Kurt Weill title Barbara Song and the ballad You Won't Forget Me . In the Hamburg district of Altona he had a series of concerts under the name Gille's Art in the jazz room from 2010–2011 (sub-project of the Hafenbahnhof ). He can also be heard on albums by Pablo Held, Robert Landfermann, Klaus Heidenreich , Björn Lücker , Sandra Hempel , Nathan Ott , Natalia Mateo , the Jazz Big Band Graz and the Koi Trio around Matthias Akeo Nowak . At the invitation of guitarist Pedro Martins , he played at the SWR New Jazz Meeting in 2017 .

Prizes and awards

In 2007 Gille received the Dr. EA Langner Jazz Prize and in the same year, together with Sandra Hempel, the jazz promotion prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Cultural Forum. In 2015 he received the Hamburg Jazz Prize as "one of the most important voices of current jazz in Hamburg". He has “an amazing musical maturity: he has excellent technique, a highly individual, unmistakable tone and is a creator of original and contemporary compositions.” In 2018 he was awarded the SWR Jazz Prize; According to the jury, "(Gille) has developed a very special art in transforming the saxophone sound spontaneously and charging it with diverse colors and emotions".
