The Subway is a music club located under a multi-storey residential building in the Belgian quarter of Cologne , which is also known as a discotheque . Since 1970 it has been located at Aachener Strasse 82–84.

history

Klaus Appelt founded the Subway , previously the cool cellar of a brewery, as a jazz club ; the first concert with the Boogie Woogie Company and Peter Trunk's trio took place on December 4, 1970. On Tuesdays, sometimes twice a week, (primarily American) jazz musicians performed, cross-financed by operating as a disco on the other days of the week. Appelt geared the program mainly to American mainstream jazz ; Musicians such as Dexter Gordon , Horace Silver , Johnny Griffin , Tommy Flanagan and Art Blakey played , but also Chet Baker and Max Roach . Stan Getz reportedly horrified fans for electronically editing his sound.

The program was of high quality, so that the radio recorded concerts. From 1984 the WDR even put its television cameras in the club: under the title "Jazz im Subway", Dieter Hens directed the first television series that broadcast live recordings from a German jazz club. Due to the wishes and fees of the television, the program could become more complex. Sun played Archie Shepp , Arnett Cobb , McCoy Tyner , Dizzy Gillespie , Joachim Kühn , Freddie Hubbard , Gary Bartz , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Tony Williams , Eugen Cicero , Ray Brown and Abdullah Ibrahim . In 2000, Peter Sommer also initiated the Rockpalast festival series Crossroads , which was filmed in the Cologne club, which was only accessible via stairs, in the first two years.

The Appelt era ended in November 2001. The club closed and was rebuilt; When it reopened in 2002, the program structure changed. Jazz concerts no longer took place. Music acts and DJs from other genres such as hip hop or electro then appeared. From 2002 to 2017 the Beatpackers Party with DJ Cem was the meeting point for hiphop and rap fans on Thursdays . Although the Subway is a small club, international greats such as DJ Hell and Hans Nieswandt also play there on Fridays and Saturdays . Jazz has only recaptured the Subway since 2008. For several years the KLAENG Festival, organized by the musicians' collective of the same name, took place there in autumn. Since the summer of 2013, the Subway Jazz Orchestra has been on stage twice a month on Wednesdays .
