Sandra Hempel (* 1972 in Pinneberg ) is a German jazz guitarist .

Career

Sandra Hempel grew up in Tornesch near Hamburg and played the accordion and piano for a few years as a child and teenager before switching to the electric guitar at the age of sixteen . A little later she began to be interested in jazz, played in local bands and became a member of the Schleswig-Holstein State Youth Jazz Orchestra in 1991.

After graduating from high school, Hempel studied jazz at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater under Dieter Glawischnig , Stephan Diez and Wolfgang Schlüter and at the Conservatory in Amsterdam with Jesse van Ruller and Maarten van der Grinten . After studying in Holland, she received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service and went to New York in 2001 for two years . There she attended the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College . Her college teachers included Paul Bollenback , Antonio Hart , Michael Mossman, and Sir Roland Hanna . In summer 2003 she graduated from college with a Master of Music in jazz performance and returned to Hamburg.

Act

Immediately afterwards she received an invitation to the JazzBaltica -Festival 2003, where she performed in a quartet with bassist Martin Wind , drummer Jochen Rückert and saxophonist Rick Margitza . During the festival she also had the opportunity to take part in a workshop with guitarist Pat Metheny. In 2005 Hempel supported the German jazz singer Ulita Knaus , whom she had already met during her studies in Amsterdam, as a guitarist on her album Sea Journey and started a duo project with her in whose program they combine jazz standards, pop songs and their own compositions. In 2006 she founded with saxophonist Stefan mouse the hamburg_jazzduo and performed with the group Low X of Jürgen Attig at the Hamburg Jazz days on. In the same year she played at the Open Air Festival Jazz in Hamburg in three different formations on one day: Der kosmische Souverän, Bernd Reincke Quintett and Buggy Braune Quintett. At a concert at the St. Ingbert Jazz Festival in 2009, she was represented in the band project Nils Landgren - Respect .

She also played in the Markus Steinhauser Quartet and the resulting quintet Tirx , in the Lutz Krajenski Group, in the Lutz Büchner Quartet, in the Dutch band New Cool Collective, but also with the Bujazzo under Peter Herbolzheimer ( Focus on Vocals 1997) and as Guest soloist of the NDR Bigband . She also appeared in a duo with the Cologne double bass player Hendrika Entzian .

In the Sandra Hempel Trio she played with Lutz Krajenski on the piano and Hervé Jeanne on the double bass. She is also represented as guitarist in the newly founded quintet Artful Earful by trombonist Dan Gottshall and also appears with Hermine Deurloo . In 2013 she was part of the JazzBaltica Ensemble . With her quartet 4-tett, to which Sebastian Gille belongs, she presented the album Licht aus in 2013 . Since 2018 she has been part of the NDR big band as the successor to Stephan Diez .

Sandra Hempel teaches at various workshops and has taught at the vocational school Hamburg School of Music and the Conservatory of the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück .

Honourings and prices

During her time in New York, Hempel won the Sisters in Jazz Competition in 2001 and the Louis Armstrong Award from the American ASCAP Foundation in 2002 . In 2007 she and Sebastian Gille received the jazz promotion award of the Schleswig-Holstein Cultural Forum.
In 2011 Hempel received the sponsorship award of the Pinneberg district culture award .
