Lutz Büchner

Lutz Büchner (born August 5, 1968 in Bremen ; † March 11, 2016 in Tokyo , Japan ) was a German jazz saxophonist .

Live and act

Büchner studied with Herb Geller at the Hamburg University of Music and then worked with the trombonist Ed Kröger . Since 1994 he has been a member of the NDR Big Band . Between 1996 and 1998 he performed regularly in Hamburg with Lucas Lindholm , Heinz Lichius and Buggy Braune and guests such as Wolfgang Schlüter and Gene Jackson . He also worked with Jörg Achim Keller's Small Bigband and with Jürgen Attig's Low X , with Nils Gessinger's band .

From 2000 to 2004 Büchner was a member of Alex Riel's band , with whom he recorded the album live at Jive (with Carsten Dahl and Jesper Lundgaard ), toured Denmark, Norway and Vietnam and performed in the Rolf Liebermann studio of the NDR. Since 2001 he was a member of Joe Gallardo's band , with whom he appeared at various festivals and recorded the album A Latin Shade of Blue . Since 2011 he has been part of Addi Münster's Old Merrytale jazz band .

With his own quartet (with Sandra Hempel , Heinz Lichius and Pepe Berns ) Büchner performed at the 2nd Hamburg Jazz Days in the Kampnagel factory in 2005 . In the same year the trio Konnex (with Björn Lücker and Philipp Steen ) created the album of the same name, which was released the following year. In 2006 Büchner's album Ring was released (with Sandra Hempel, Danny Gottlieb , Vladislav Sendecki , Paul Imm and Jürgen Attig).

With the NDR Big Band, Büchner performed at festivals in London, Chicago, Paris, New York and Beijing and took part in tours through South America, Spain, Portugal and South Africa. During a Japan tour of the NDR big band, he died in Tokyo at the age of 47 of a heart attack . He leaves behind his wife and a son.

Joachim Knuth , radio program director at NDR, wrote about Büchner's death:

“The news of Lutz Büchner's death affects me very much. I experienced him as a lovable person who lived passionately with and for music. Lutz Büchner had jazz in his blood. He loved the playful approach to music, improvisation . The death of this impressive saxophonist is a great loss for the NDR Bigband, for the NDR. "

The official memorial service took place on April 5, 2016 in Hamburg, to which Büchner's musical accompanist Al Jarreau also traveled from the USA. During the funeral procession, jazz funeral- style songs were played from Jarreau's hometown of New Orleans .
