The Old Merry Tale Jazzband (OMTJ) was a Hamburg Dixieland band that was founded in 1956.

She had her greatest successes in the early 1960s with songs like My sweetie wants to go sailing with me on Sunday ; a hit from the 1961 film of the same name with Vivi Bach , Karin Dor and Harald Juhnke . In 1961 it climbed to fourth place at times and was among the top 10 for 13 weeks. In the same year the film So loves and kisses in Tyrol , the band was also featured in the film with their song Celery . Hello little Miss and Auf der Lüneburger Heide were other successful songs by the band.

The group received a contract from Deutsche Grammophon in 1960, and the band members played full-time for two years. One of the founding members was the trumpeter Gerhard Vohwinkel, who also worked as an arranger and composer for the band. In 1957 the trombonist Jost 'Addi' Münster joined them, who became the leader of the band in 1958. Long-standing members were Jost 'Addi' Münster (trombone since 1957), Reinhard Zaum (bass, tuba, vocals since 1959), Peter Lange (trumpet until 1959), Joachim Nolte (trumpet), Gerhard Vohwinkel (1959–1960 trumpet), Dieter Bergmann (since 1961 trumpet, vocals), Jochen Nolte (1961 trumpet), Eberhard Bendzko (since 1981 trumpet), Jochen Rose (since 1986 trumpet), Peter Schubert (1960–1963 clarinet), Gerd Lorenz (1966/67 clarinet), Hellmut Lamszus (clarinet since 1971; professor of vocational education at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg ), Bernd Reiners (drums since 1971), Helmut Peters (1966 drums), Wolfgang Brinker (1962–1967 drums), Dieter Ebeling (piano since 1967), Bruno Lehfeldt (piano since 1976), Hans-Jürgen Bock (piano since 1958), Andreas von der Meden (banjo, guitar, vocals since 1969), Peter Meyer (banjo, guitar, vocals since 1979), Kai Heuer (1967 Banjo), Harald Vohwinkel (1961–1963 Banjo).

The OMTJ played until 1984. They performed regularly on the first Friday of the month in the " Fabrik (Hamburg) ". Up to this point in time a total of 14 singles, 24 LPs and 3 EPs had been produced. Successors have been the "Traditional Old Merry Tale Jazz Band" since 1985 and "Addi Munster's Old Merrytale Jazz Band" since 1984. In 2006 the Old Merry Tale Jazzband released a double CD for the 50th anniversary with recordings from 1960 to 1980 (with guests such as Knut Kiesewetter , Fatty George , Monty Sunshine , Bob Wilber , Dick Cary , Charly Antolini , Helle Wiese, Elke Hendersen, Rudi Bohn Choir, Willem , Roy Williams , Audrey Motaung ).

Addi Münster's Old Merrytale Jazzband was founded by one of the oldest members of the old band, Jost "Addi" Münster. Gerhard Vohwinkel worked as musical director until 2012. In addition to Dixieland, they are also based on the style of the early swing orchestras of the pre-big band era such as that of Benny Moten .

They played annually in January at the International Hot Jazz Meeting at the CCH in Hamburg and often at the Dixieland Festival in Dresden. In 1988 and 1989 they played at the Dixieland Festival in Sacramento . All band members except for Jost Münster, who is a tax advisor as his main job, are full-time musicians.

Today Reinhard Zaum is the oldest member of the Traditional Old Merry Tale Jazz Band (since 1959) and is also the leader. Most of the band members are part-time active in the band. B. Before his retirement he was an import and export merchant.
