Danny Gottlieb

Daniel Richard "Danny" Gottlieb (born April 18, 1953 in New York ) is an American jazz drummer.

Life

Gottlieb grew up in Union, New Jersey , and began playing drums when he was 14. He studied at the University of Miami , where he graduated in 1975 (BM), and privately with Joe Morello (since 1970), Gary Chester , Mel Lewis and Jack DeJohnette, among others .

He became known in the mid-1970s as a member of Gary Burton's band . In 1977 he left with Pat Metheny to become a member of the first Pat Metheny Group (with Mark Egan and Lyle Mays ), of which he was a member until 1984. In 1978 he was on tour with Eberhard Weber's Colors . He was also a member of the bands of Stan Getz (briefly in the 1980s), the Gil Evans Orchestra (with whom he played frequently), Bobby McFerrin , the Mahavishnu Orchestra of John McLaughlin (around 1984), Eddie Gomez , Al DiMeola (1985 ), Mike Stern and played with numerous other jazz greats and other musicians such as Sting . In 1982 he founded the group Elements with Mark Egan as co-leader, the debut album of the same name was released in 1982. At times he played in the Contempo Jazz Trio with Mark Soskin and Chip Jackson .

Gottlieb taught regularly in jazz clinics and has also published several instructional DVDs, some with his teacher Joe Morello. He is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida and has been artist in residence at several other universities.

Gottlieb was in demand as a studio musician on numerous records as a sideman (five of which received Grammys), several as a co-leader e.g. B. von Elements and brought out five CDs as a leader by 2007 (first Aquamarine 1987).
