José "Joe" Gallardo (born September 22, 1939 in Corpus Christi , Texas) is an American musician of Latin and modern jazz ( trombone , piano , arrangements , composition).

Live and act

From the age of six, Gallardo received lessons from his father, a piano teacher. At the age of 15 he discovered the trombone and played it in student and amateur bands. Between 1961 and 1963 he worked in the Mexican Luis Arcaraz Orchestra and with Stan Kenton , but also studied composition. With the "Seventh Army Band" he came to Stuttgart in 1963 , where he also worked with Wolfgang Dauner and Fred Braceful . After military service he studied music education in his hometown until 1968. Then he worked for Nelson Riddle , Peggy Lee , Sammy Davis , but also with Peter Ponzol and Abbey Rader , before going to Mongo Santamaría in 1974 , for whom he wrote "Amanecer" ( Grammy 1978). In 1978 he moved to Germany and worked as an arranger and soloist with the Erwin Lehn Orchestra and also played with Wolfgang Lackerschmid . He also performed with the "Connexion Latina" by Rudi Fuesers , with Joe Henderson , with Roman Schwaller , with Wilson de Oliveira and with the "Rhythm Combination and Brass" by Peter Herbolzheimer . In 1991 Gallardo switched to the NDR Bigband and was there as a permanent member until 2008 first trombonist. During this time he held a professorship at the Hamburg University of Music . Since 1993 he has also been one of the directors of the Schleswig-Holstein State Youth Jazz Orchestra.
