Abbey Rader (born October 14, 1943 in New Brunswick (New Jersey) ) is an American drummer of avant-garde jazz .

Live and act

Rader grew up in a family of musicians in the Bronx ; his father was also a drummer. He started playing traditional jazz in the early 1960s. Under the influence of the music of John Coltrane , he turned to modern jazz, worked with musicians such as Herman Foster and Bobby Johnson and ultimately became part of the New York loft jazz scene.

At the end of the 1970s he moved to Europe with Peter Ponzol , initially to France, where he was able to publish his album The Thing . Then he moved to Germany, where he worked first with Bob Lenox and then with George Bishop . With Ponzol and Joe Gallivan he recorded the album Prism , which was released on vinyl in 1978 . In the 1980s he was part of Gunter Hampel's big band for almost five years , in which he also appeared with Jeanne Lee and Marion Brown ; he also played in the combos of Hampel. He also performed with Mal Waldron and Marc Levine and formed his Right Time Band . He also worked with John Handy , L. Subramaniam and Sigi Busch . He also gave drum courses at the universities in Detmold, Göttingen and Braunschweig and at the Einbeck music school.

In 1989 he returned to the USA. In the 1990s and 2000s he first worked with David Liebman , with whom he recorded four albums. Billy Bang then brought him (as a replacement for Dennis Charles ) to his Jazz Doctors , where he performed with Frank Lowe and Ed Schuller . He also played a duo with Billy Higgins at the Vision Festival . In recent years Rader has performed with John McMinn, Noah Brandmark, Kyle Motl and Kidd Jordan , but also with Peter Ponzol and Keshavan Maslak .

Rader's album, First Gathering was mentioned as one of the best of 2015.
